What is Laminated Glass?

Laminated glass, also referred to as safety glass, is classified as Grade A Safety Glass.

It consists of two or more sheets of glass permanently bonded together with an interlayer designed to improve acoustics and/or impact resistance.

The interlayer reduces the risk of the glass breaking and forming long, dangerous shards.

Laminated glass is perfect for areas of the home most prone to injury from human impact such as doors and full-length windows, and offers a cost-effective alternative to toughened glass.

If you require special performance, laminated glass is suitable for sound reduction, energy efficiency and additional security.

Fun Fact: In 1902, the French Le Carbone corporation obtained a patent for coating glass objects with celluloid in order to render them less susceptible to cracking or breaking.

Laminated glass was invented in 1903 by the French chemist Édouard Bénédictus (1878-1930), inspired by a laboratory accident. A glass flask had become coated with the plastic cellulose nitrate and when dropped shattered but did not break into pieces

Advantages of Laminated Glass

1. Increased sound insulation

2. Safer – if broken, glass fragments remain in place rather than breaking into dangerous shards

3. Improved security

4. Durable

5. Better protection against UV rays which can fade furnishings

6. Available in a range of tones and opaque options

7. Laminated Low-E glass decreases UV transmission offering some protection of fading furnishings

Safety glass is a product that is designed to cause minimal injury when it breaks, compared to regular annealed glass. The two most commonly used safety glass products are laminated glass and toughened/tempered glass. Both products have very different and distinct features that provide various levels of safety and security.

Yes, however the entire panel of glass will usually need to be replaced. We recommend replacing these panels with toughened glass as the hole required for the pet door makes the glass weak. Toughened glass alleviates this issue.

Laminated glass is two pieces of glass laminated together with an interlayer. When it breaks, it cracks but holds together, like a windscreen. Toughened glass is just one panel, but has undergone a process to make it 4-5 times stronger than normal glass. When it breaks, it shatters into thousands of small pieces the size of a fingernail.

  • Sometimes toughened glass will shatter instantaneously, without an apparent reason. This is often due to a small flaw within the glass itself from manufacture. If the flaw is present, the glass failure could happen at any time.
  • Another reason is that the toughened glass pane, when it was first installed, may be touching a metallic object such as a nail, screw or window frame. Changing weather conditions causes metal/wooden materials to expand and contract, putting pressure on the glass and causing it to explode.

In most cases regular laminated glass can be replaced within 24 hours however special laminated products may take 7-10 days, in which case a temporary timber covering will be installed in place of the glass (if required) to protect occupants from potential break-ins and exposure to the elements.
